A. 1. Sound Presentation
/y/ initial or middle is always followed by a short or long vowel.
However, when it is at the end it makes the long diphthong /ey/or /ay/ (in classical Persian)
Note the difference between a long vowel and a diphthong in rare examples below.
Also, note that because native speakers do not commonly put short vowel signs over the consonants,
it is only the context that can tell which one is a long vowel [ī] at the end or the diphthong [ey].

N.B. Notice the difference between letter “lam” ([l] sound) and letter “alef” in the last name of the Shamlou. “Lam” is connected from both sides while “alef” is connected only from the left.
